Misty
(aka Moo Cakes) is from the first breeding of Jamie to Windy. She was
the one from that litter that stuck out to us as having the most field
potential as a young puppy of only 8 weeks. That has proven to be
true. Like Remie (who was from the second breeding), Misty has lots of
focus and intensity in the field. She has a nice headpiece, nice side
movement, and beautiful profile. She is a smaller, more compact bitch,
but is rather solid, like her mom. Also like Remie, she has suffered
from Clint having a full time job, but only working as a part time
trainer, and especially from him spending most of his time and efforts
with Jamie over recent years. Consequently, she is still working on her
big dog titles. One of Misty’s littermates, Scully
(CH Bear Country X-Files JH WCX), originally co-owned with us by Kass
Goulding and Andrea Holsinger was shown at 2 national specialties,
winning her class at the 2000 national specialty, and placing 4th in the
competitive Working Retriever class at the 2001 specialty.
Additionally, Scully's first litter produced nicely, with one pup
placing in both of her classes at the 2003 national specialty, and
another winning Best In Sweeps at a supported entry in California.
Misty is on the up and coming list here at Bear Country and we feel that
she will surely prove herself in the show ring, in the field, and as a
brood bitch.

“Rem
Cake” was the pick bitch from Jamie and Windy’s second litter. We
wanted Paulette Swartzendruber to have a nice puppy out of Windy, as she
had owned Windy’s sire, Rammy, and we knew that she was looking for a
descendant of Ram to be her next OTCH. We would guess that Windy was
probably the nicest or at the very least, one of the nicest of Ram’s
kids. Consequently, we offered a puppy to Paulette on a co-ownership.
Paulette took her without hesitation, and named her Remie in Rammy’s
honor. Paulette’s good friend April Senseney, who lived fairly close to
Paulette, also took one of the littermates, Breezy (Bear Country April
Breeze). Remie lived with Paulette until she was about 1 ½ years old
before Paulette called us to say that she didn’t feel that Remie was going to be her next OTCH. We understood totally, and took Remie back
with open arms. We were excited to get her back and start a strict
force breaking and basic obedience program. Her fieldwork improved both
dramatically and rapidly, and we were able to get a better handle on
her, as she really seemed to thrive on constant structured training.
This is not to say that it came without some sweat on our part. Along
the way, we allowed her to have fun at breed shows, where she easily
completed her championship, in great style. Remie is very elegant and
moves effortlessly. She has a beautiful profile and a nice headpiece.
In the field, we would have to say that she is among the fastest we have
ever owned. She runs straight lines naturally on blinds and marks. She
watches birds better than any dog we have ever owned. She is by far,
one of the most talented flats we have ever seen, and therefore one of
our very favorites, but training her has not been for the meek at heart,
for, like driving a Ferrari, you have to be able to keep pace with the
car. One of Remie’s littermates is Phoenix (CH Bear Country Kaotic
Phoenix SH WCX), owned and trained by Phyllis Giroux. Phoenix won her
division of the unsteady singles competition at the Flat-coat National
Specialty (expertly handled by Ann Steer). Phoenix is currently being
campaigned, by Phyllis for her Master title. Our good friend, Mitch
White recently retired his HRCH CH MH Hawk WCX HOF, who we bred to Remie in 2006.
Knowing that Mitch was in need for another good master dog, we offered
him Remie to train and run as co-owner. Mitch has successfully campaigned Remie to her Senior Hunter title, and they should be ready to run in Master in the fall of 2008. We believe that she is the
most talented, intelligent, and sweet offspring of our Jamie to date.

Patty
is another one of the Cake sisters (Patty Cake), and like her mother,
Fever, is a personal favorite of Sherie’s. Fever had to have a cesarean
section, due to complications during birth (mostly due to this being her
first litter at almost 8 years of age, and she just plain gave out while
having contractions). The veterinarian seemed hesitant to tell us about
the pups initially, but finally just blurted out, “there seems to be a
couple of brown ones”. Of course, we were overjoyed, but the vet was
unaware that flats came in any color other than black. He thought that
there might have been some illegitimate breeding going on. While we
knew that Fever carried liver, we were unsure that Jamie carried it, but
now, our questions were answered. Patty is very sweet, like her
mother. She is always heeling at your side while on walks with all of
the dogs. She is the first to bust into cover and loves to hunt in
difficult areas until she finds the bird. She is a beautiful and rich
dark liver color and has a wonderful headpiece. Patty is currently in
advanced field training, having completed all of her basic, and most of
her transition work, and should run at the Senior and Master levels
shortly. She has only been in the show ring once, to date, and will
thus start her show career sometime this year. Patty has a litter
brother Shag (CH Hairy Potter MH) that is owned by Ray & Linda Butts of
Memphis, who is being campaigned by Ray at the field trial qualifying
level. Another litter brother to Patty is Cub (Bear Country’s Little
Guy SH) owned by Jeff & Kim Bryson of Michigan who are campaigning him
at the Master level.

Jayda
was a stud fee puppy that we presently co-own with Beth Meaney of Savvy
Flat-coated Retrievers. Beth was looking for a well-bred puppy from
Jamie that she could take all the way in field. After Andy and Eileen
Gevers had arranged with us to breed Jamie to Cayman, we contacted
Beth. Clint picked up Jayda from Andy and Eileen, while enroute home
from a Mike Lardy workshop. Jayda lived with us initially, then went to
live with Beth when only a few months old. We got Jayda back to start
her field training for Beth when she was around 7 months old. Jayda
took a hiatus from training in order to have a litter. Those pups are
now doing great, and you can see some of them on this website. Jayda is
currently in training again, and she is now doing quite well. She has the same habit as her father of
jumping straight up on all fours and kissing you directly on the nose.
She is a joy to have in the house, and we will surely miss Jayda when
she goes back to live with Beth.

Bear
Country's Wild Angel came bouncing into our lives October 11, 2004...10 weeks
of happy, energetic, enthusiastic Flat-coat joy! She instantly became a part
of our human as well as canine family and showed us from the beginning that
she was perfectly named. One minute she would look at us with a sweet angelic
face and the next be off and running wild with the puppy crazies! She
delighted us with her natural retrieving abilities...always carrying a toy in
her mouth just in case anyone wanted to throw it for her!
Angel has matured beautifully. She finished her show championship going BOB over Specials several times. Now, to continue with her field career! Our plans are to send Angel to Mitch White of Ohio for her formal field training.
Ed and I
thank Sherie and Clint for sharing this wonderful girl with us!!!!

Bear
Country Call of the Wild (Echo aka Sissy) is a littermate to Chase, Angel,
Java, Kindle, and Ruby, out of Whatzit and Jayda. We considered placing
her as a puppy, but there was always something about her personality that
made us want to hold onto her. She has a very cute little body, but oh….
that gay tail. Because of it, she will never make a show dog, but her
intensity and drive in the field is amazing. You have to watch every shoe
you own when Echo is headed out to the yard for she is a canine vacuum
cleaner. She has springs in her rear legs, and along with her powerful
muscling, she can clear the chain link fence in the back yard with ease.
She is incredibly fast when sent for birds, and she has a habit of leaping
up into your face when you are not looking………like a chip off the old
Granddaddy block (Jamie).

When
Kindle arrived I was thrilled. Here was this tiny pup, fresh off a long
airplane ride, who literally bounced out of her crate with a happy
canine smile and bright, shinning eyes. She was a little firecracker
who was overjoyed to have arrived. The thing that impressed me the most
was her immediate eye contact. To date she hasn’t taken her eyes off me
yet! Kindle is a wonderful, attentive little girl.
I’ve decided I should
have called her ‘tigger’ as she bounces up and down, easily getting
above a six-foot fence in a vertical leap. She’s not trying to get
over, just bouncing for the joy of it. She is a real people-dog and
will greet anyone I let her, with a leap up to give them a kiss in the
face. Kindle has grown up with a gaggle of English-Cockers and she
believes she’s a lap dog, though when she gets into your lap she’s
constantly wiggling to get closer. Her tongue is a dangerous weapon!
She’s nearly two now, but has yet to start her show career. I’m waiting for her to mature before entering her in conformation, but she’s already started her
obedience. She has her novice title already and she’s got a solid understanding of her open work with a
smattering of utility work thrown in for good measure. At this time, we
have chosen to put her fieldwork on the back burner, but watch out for
her in obedience! She’s assuredly one of the best heelers I’ve ever
trained.
Thanks, Sherie for sharing her with me.
