Dogs At Bear Country, our passion is dogs. We met through dogs and they are what brought us together to begin with. We both separately started with golden retrievers, a breed that taught us there were many venues that these wonderful dogs could compete in. However, we now mostly enjoy and live with flat-coats, with an occasional lab or two. The labs enable us to compete at a higher level in the field as well as retain our sanity while training on difficult field setups and concepts (as well as less hair on the carpet). Being fond of all canines, we have taken small detours along the way with breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, White Bull Terriers, Shetland Sheepdogs, and Rottweilers. Over the past ten years or so, we have come extremely close to acquiring a Bernese Mountain Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, and a Norwich Terrier (for which the prospect still exists).
This breed has totally captured our hearts, and our house is dominated by both black and liver flatties. They are quite energetic, loveable, beautiful, and challenging to train. There is nothing we enjoy more, than to take the entire group with us for a romp across the property. In fact, they are stir-crazy every morning (quite relentless actually), until they have had their morning adventure. You will see on our web pages that both black and liver are quite breathtaking. Over the years we have had friends ask, “when are you going to get serious and get a real dog”? We are as serious with this breed as we can possibly be, and aspire to take the road as far as it will take us. Goldens: Our first love was and always will be goldens, and we cannot picture our household without at least one swamp collie. We prefer a more traditional dog, which is rarely seen anymore, more in the type of “Charlie”, or “Apollo” (more popular in the early to mid 80’s). Our “Pearlie” was from those lines and can be seen here. We still discuss from time to time whether we will someday have another competitive show golden, and/or a homebred breed champion that will compete in field events. For now, we simply enjoy Pearlie. Labs: We got our first lab, Mac, out of one of the top field dogs in the history of the breed, to help introduce us to the advanced levels of fieldwork, and be more successful in Master Hunt Tests. Mac is now co-owned with a close friend, and is collected so that we may at some time in the future continue his great heritage. The two kids that presently reside with us are young hopefuls out of tremendous breeding stock. They are both very energetic, and appear to have loads of desire and trainability. We plan to trial them and take them to the highest levels attainable. Puppies/ Upcoming Litters: February 2006 Litter: CH BEAR CNTRY HOB-B REMINISCENT SH WCX x HRCH CH GAMEKEEPER’S BLACK HAWK MH WCX HOF < More information here in pdf form > Gone But Not Forgotten: This is a special page, not for every dog we have ever owned, but certainly for the most special ones. This group of dogs could accurately tell the story of how we have been educated by them as to how dogs think, learn, and love. They taught us all we know about showing, training, and caring for dogs. Take a minute to read their stories and appreciate their beauty. Many tears were shed at their passing. Started Dogs For Sale: While not always available, it is advisable to check here periodically for diamonds in the ruff. We are constantly trying to retain what we think are future champions or master hunters, but space limitations may prevent us from holding on to every dog. |
